Tapering the neck?

Me again...so, while I'm waiting for my spokeshave to be delivered from Ebay (thanks again for the advice), I decided to work on additional necks and get as far as I can on those. My question this time: Do you taper your necks down and make them smaller at the nut than the heel? I assume it could be considered personal preference. Are there standard widths at certain frets? On my current (and first) build it just seems like the neck is a little wide at the nut. Thanks in advance for the responses. Once I get the neck rounded on my first CBG all that's left is to add electronics (Heaven help me) and string her up. Can't wait.

  • If I make a 3 string the neck is not tapered.  For a 4 string, it's 1 1/2" at the nut and 1 3/4" at the 12th fret.  For a 6 string, 42 mm at the nut and 2" at the 12 fret.  Always make your second measurement at the 12th fret.  That way if you stick with the same scale length, your string spread at the bridge will always be the same.
