Crash landing: Cracked box top!

Yesterday evening i wanted to apply an extra layer of poly eurethane laquer on my last built cbg ( my second) for protection and also to keep the linseed oil residue in. I seem to be allergic to linseed oil, so earlier on i removed it by wiping thoroughly with thinner and sanding hard. After that i put on some layers of spray laquer, but the oil still bleeded thru somehow. It kept burning my hand. So i wanted some thicker heavier laquer on it and decided on brushing on poly eurethane. I hung it from an old microphone stand with some wire so i could finish it all around. But when i got to the underside of the box i must have pushed it up too much because the wire came loose and it crashed to the floor! ...

The top of the box now has a crack along the lenght.

(I cried like a baby and got drunk after that)

After a really bad night's sleep i just decided to take it to a real luthier and let him try to salvage it somehow.

  • I don't want to take a photo of it. It hurts too much. Thanks for the tips but i'd rather bring it to the luthier because i don't want to take any chances. It's the top, so the bridge has to be able to put pressure on it again. Furtermore I have to take it on vacation in 3 weeks to the US so there's not much time anymore to experiment.

Yeah, the scars may probably add a little mojo.

  • Got a photo of the damage?  You could probably fill the crack with epoxy, CA, or wood putty.  It would either be nearly invisible or it would give the box "character".  Remember, we're not building  Gibson Les Pauls here.  Take your setbacks and turn them into treasures!
