I think this might be a good idea for those who want a hand plane cheap. Stanley makes a little one called the RB5 and has replaceable blades. I think about $12USD

*Good* quality pre-1950s Stanleys are available CHEAP at flea markets. I paid $3.00 for a 220 that just needed a light rubdown with steel wool and WD40 to restore it to working condition. My first good block was a #19 knuckle-cap that's seen me through 30+ years of projects --$2.50 after haggling. I have lots of #5 jacks, 1905 - 1949, none of which I paid more than $25.00 for, any of which can do a better job than a decent quality power jointer or planer.
I've had one of these for years, but it is no substitute for a real good plane or two. It is cheap, but the blades are too small to be properly honed to the correct angle - so you have to continually buy replacements. The whole thing is just too lightweight to work well as a plane. A good-quality block plane - a proper one - is not much different in size but a whole lot different in usefullness. Good tools are an investment but you can invest less by buying used ones. A lot of people are getting conned into buying cheap power tools and flimsy gadgets these days, so theres lots of good hand tools around at low prices.
