Hello everybody. My name's Ron from Calvert county Maryland. I always wanted to learn how to play guitar but it just seemed too tough for me. I was at a local cigar store this past weekend and saw this odd looking instrument on the wall. Turns out that it's a cigar box guitar. After the "hey that's neat" factor I started asking the man behind the counter some questions. He didn't know much about it other than the guy who builds them said "anybody can play it" but I wasn't sure if that meant it's cool to pull it down and act a fool or anybody can actually play music on it. After a few more minutes the man says it was built for the store but he could call the guy or give me the number if I wanted more info.
Anyway, I called SlowHound from the cigar store and he was more than kind. He gave me an over the phone lesson with the guitar at the store and I was shocked. Now I'm not saying it was great but I could hear something there. He encouraged me to explore this site and build my own but I gotta have one now. I'll be meeting him this week and hopefully bringing home my own CBG.

Thanks. Slowhound said I could build one in the time it took to meet with him on Thursday but I'm so caught up with watching videos I don't think it'll happen. Says he has the sister guitar to the one at the store that he would sell. It's a 3 string fretless with a piezo. I don't have an amplifier though.
You go for it Ron. I got my little 10watt amp at a used music shop for $20. I don't worry about beating it up taking it out for walks. They have lots of used practice and guitar amps for $30 to 50. I think you should get the guitar and play it acoustic for a while then find an amp. I just found a new old Squire BP15 for $25 at a rummage sale Saturday. I started out with a Shane Speal 3 string "Chugger". It's a fun box! Then I got a Chris Weekly 4 string. They both play great and are very simply made. They gave me the courage to make my own. Now I'm on #20.
That's a great story. I think you'll find that the folks at Nation are mostly great friends. And it is a lot of fun learning to build and play these strange homemades. I love to browse the photos daily for inspiration and laughs. ... Welcome
