Hello folks. Justin here from Asheville, North Carolina. Brand new here. Just ordered my first CBG, a four string. Looks like most videos and playing instructions are for 3 strings. Any tips where I can find info specific to 4 strings? Thanks! Glad to be here.
You need to be a member of Cigar Box Nation to add comments!
I am new to CBN. Just building my first and second builds. I am not a musician. Can't play a note.
I just love building things. I would like to learn, once I get a descant box built.
I have been looking for someone who plays a cigar box guitar in my area , just to take a look at my first two guitars to give me some feedback and advice. I live near Winston-Salem, NC.
Would you be interested in getting together somewhere in the Asheville area to take a look at what I have built and see what you think.
There does not seem to be many cigar box players / builders in western NC. It would be nice to try to get a little group together to meet once in a while and trade ideas.
Personally, for fretted playing I have become fond of tuning four strings in fifths. If you do, its easy to use music tab and instruction from other instruments tuned in fifths. Like the Mandolin, Mandola, etc.
Open/slide playing is a different decision, and Keni covers that quite well. I own all his instructional CD's and recommend his instruction.
My pleasure. I sometimes tune my 4 string DF#ad which is the high four strings from a 6 string open D tuning.
Let me know how you get on and if it helps later on I could do a very basic intro to that tuning.
GDgb seems to be a popular 4 string tuning and also DGbd.
Best of luck with your journey...
Paul

Again, thanks so much. My CBG gets here on Tuesday. I'm sure I will be needing help once I get a chance to play around with it some....can't wait!

Another good resource is Keni Lee Burgess's lessons:

Welcome Justin! I am afraid I can't help with instruction but Paul has given you a couple of good links!
