Howdy folks!

Hello all, so glad I found CBN, very informative and inspiring site.

Back in September I was shopping on Ebay, for what I don't remember, but saw a cigar box guitar for $250. I thought "wow, that's cool!" and after hemming and hawing over it for about 30 seconds I bought it. Yeah, I've been told I can be impulsive.

Well, when it arrived, I was pretty disappointed. It wasn't nearly as pretty or well built as the pictures made it look. I mean in the pics it looked like something Blind Willy would play, but when I got it it looked like Blind Willy had built it... during a hurricane.  lol

Anyway, I thought "well I could have done better than that and a whole lot cheaper". Yes, my impulsive streak is constantly at odds with my tightwad nature. I'm complex like that. So I went to the local antique store to find a box, there were none to be had, but I did find a Kodak 35mm movie reel can. Yup... with the help of the wealth of info on Cigar Box Nation, I put a neck and strings on it and it turned out pretty good.

Next was a license plate and now I'm hooked... I've got two more guitars in the works (i.e. parts scattered across the kitchen table) and about 8 million ideas floating around in my head about future builds.

I'm a CNC machine service technician and spend most of time out of town so only have the weekends to do any guitar building (which, if my wife reads this, is far less important than her honey-do list). On the bright side I have evenings in the hotel to try to actually learn to play what I build.

Yeah, so anyway, now that I've introduced myself, I hope I can count on you folks as expert witnesses to testify on my behalf when this terrible affliction inevitably leads to my divorce.

Just kidding!

(in case my wife's lawyer is reading this)

 :D

  • Thanks guys.

  • That's what got me building guitars back in the 80's, been building ever since. Welcome aboard.

  • Yeah- that's sort of the way it happens. My introduction was seeing, and playing, a CBG that cost $650 Canadian when on holiday- but I figured I could find one cheaper back home. And I did. It was so well made, and also so addictive, and so much fun to play, that it took months to pluck up the courage to build a proper one of my one. Finally I did- it's got no frets (I'm not yet that confident), but it sounds awesome. And every time I play it, I think "I actually BUILT this!", and the world seems a brighter place.

And that, in five words, is the whole CBG/ CBN experience- the world seems a brighter place. Welcome to it!

Now- how do I get shot of most of my six-string stable?
