"Hi, My name is Patrick and I have a Cigar Box problem."

Someone told me I belong here.  Last November a guy brought a Cigar Box Guitar to my regular Blues Jam.  (The Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation Saturday Barber Shop Jam.)  Anyhow I was hooked before I heard a note.  The simplicity, the gadgetry, the economy, the craftsmanship, the fun.  And I had yet to hear a single note.  The thing never sounds great but it also never sounds bad.  Tune it to an open cord and have fun with the slide.  Play what you feel and the thing just works.
I went straight to the Tobacco Store and then the Home Depot.  I re-appropriated tuners from a junk guitar, and in a weekend I was throwing down some Tobacco road and enjoying hours of endless slide solos.  Then the Atten Deficit Disorder set in and I realized that I wanted 4 strings and frets, so a google session landed me at StuMac and I ordered the nut and fret wire.  I then started building neck #2 out of Oak instead of Poplar so it would hold up tot he abuse I was intent on giving it.  I tune it like a bass EADG so I can play power cords, but I will likely mess with more open tuning now that I am learning to actually play the slide.
It pelt odd plugging it into the Fender Tube amp, so I built a Cigar Box amp out of an old computer speaker and Radio Shack parts to build a 9 volt amp circuit based on the 1/2watt Little Gem.  That was fun, but bigger is still better so i made one with a Jensen MOD 6" and better circuitry from Mouser.  She is sweet.
Now I am working on a micro tube Cigar Box amp.  And after that I plan to make a resonator.  Holy crap I have a problem.  Have I come to the right place?
Patrick

  • Patrick,
It is way too late for you to run away from your addiction, you might as well sit back and enjoy the rush on here with the rest of us. Bob H.

  • Hi Patrick. I have a problem too. :)

I love the wire grill on your amp build. I'm just starting an amp project to go with my CBG too. My little PigNose amp works OK but doesn't have the right vibe either.
  • Your in the right place my friend. We're all CBG junkies here. Welcome aboard.
