Hi folks

My name is John. I just joined last month. Looking forward to the republic of Texas event. I hope I can make it. I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

I started making cigar box amplifiers by accident. About 3 months ago I had a friend who was moving into an RV and wanted to be able to play his electric guitar. His amp was not only too big for the RV but would pull a whopping 6 amps from his battery through an appropriately sized inverter.

I set out to make an all tube amplifier that would run on 12 volts. Through some digging on the internet I found some tubes that will do just that and I mimicked the fender champ circuit the best I could and the result was very good. It sounds just like the champ. It also only pulls .5 amps so he can play all he wants and not risk draining his battery to the point of not having running water, etc...  Feel free to browse my pictures to see them. I was looking for a nice enclosure for it and for some reason I thought of using a cigar box. It seems like I've been building them ever since. It's a great fit.

I've built 5 amps so far and I'm coming up with other designs to run bigger more powerful tubes in them.

I really want to build a cigar box guitar or a few. I love the simplicity of it while delivering a nice sound.

  • Howdy John,

That amp of yours sounds pretty awesome. I bet it would do well as a harp amp. I also bet you could do some horse trading around here if you wanted to. Keep up the good work!

    • Sounds great. I'm excited to build my first cigar box guitar soon!

  • Welcome aboard John, glad to have you.

There was a schematic online of the Tube Cricket that ran on a 9volt battery and used a 12AX7 tube. Though about making one of those for myself.
