From time to time the subject of suitability of one wood or another comes up. Is it stiff enough for a neck? Is it hard enough for a fretboard?
I was mooching around on the web a few days ago and found this site. It certainly isn't perfect because it doesn't mention every type of wood that we might conceivably use, but it seems better than nothing. If you don't know of anything better it may be useful. If you do know of a better site please broadcast it loud and clear.
Hope this helps a little.

Maple at Lowes? Please tell!
Thanks Bob.
I see what you mean about "almost too much". I will now have to get a microscope to help me identify the different types of wood.
For anyone else who is interested and needs some bedtime reading this is the web address. The first item in the list is the handbook and if you find the bit that says "View PDF" you can download it from there.
All the best.

John,
The US Forest Products Laboratory, Wood Handbook can be downloaded free and is a great wealth of information- almost too much in most cases.

John...great information. Picked up some nice hard maple at Lowes just yesterday and now can be reasonably happy about the find...P
