What can I build with this?

(I tried to post this earlier, but I can't find it on the board.  Sorry if this is a repeat.)

This is a file drawer divider, from my bosses files.  He cleaned out his filing cabinets and was pitching a lot of these.  I rescued four of them.

They're 8" x 12", steel.

I'm looking for ideas of what kind of guit or string instrument I can make from these things.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

  • If you want a metal box, get some aluminum angle and pop rivet the box together... leave the back for last after you finish the guitar...
  • Grab some rebar, a cheap cake pan and make a steel slide guitar... use those pieces for the lid/soundboard... weld it all together into a heavy metal guitar...

    • I spit coffee everwhere, cleaned up, then looked at the picture...

      then I spit more coffee!

  • I concur with Brian - make a box out of it. But my mad scientist brain is envisioning a bass like instrument
  • Take some 2x4 to make a frame and screw one on top and one on the bottom and you got yourself a box.

Another idea would be to make a File Plate (like a License Plate) build.  Make a box that is that size and just screw one of the plates on top for a resonator build.

If they are think enough you could cut them to a smaller size, or score the inside and bend them into a box form.

I won't say the possibilities are endless, but you have a few ideas so far...

    • Yea...really good ideas!  Thanks!

  • CBG amp.

  • GEt them all, sell at a salvage center, and use the money for more CBG supplies.

    • Good idea, but I only saved four.  The rest are gone in the trash.
