The plans for the $20 CBG uke build on this site, the one that has the vid of Shelley playing the first uke she made, has zip ties for the frets.
I'm willing to try that, but I have a concern: How does one get the plastic strip of the tie to lie down flat on the fretboard? It would look messy and sound crappy if there's any gap between the strip/tie and the fingerboard.
Anyone else use zip ties for frets, and have a solution/suggestion?

I used zip ties for a Uke and the work fairly well. I set the pull tabs on the top of the fingerboard and rounded the corners just a bit so they would lie flat. They do shift around sometimes, so you might want to mark the board where the fret should be for reference.
