scarf joint / miter saw

hey everyone.

Still chasing the best method for getting the perfect scarf joint cut. Looking at miter saws online this morning and seeing "angle stop at 15 degrees" so i thought oohh perfect!

But then i thought about it.. that would be a short 15 degree cut. Am i right in thinking I actually need a 75 degree cut ( depending on which way you measure it, but in terms of saw capacities??

Hope this makes sense, maybe i'm thinking about this too much and need more coffee :-)

  • Simple question, would it be overkill to drill a couple of holes straight through and stick in a couple of dowels? I worry about the glue. Or should I just suck it up and stop worrying. LOL

    • I have had great luck with wood dowels keeping the head stock from slipping when gluing.  it also looks pretty nice if you use  different wood as fr s contrast in wood color.  good luck on your builds!

    • Dowels could help keep things aligned but don't really add strength. A decent wood glue will be stronger than the wood itself, fear not little buckaroos!
    • OK. I guess I should just not worry about it. Thanks guys!

    • Through the neck/joint? I dunno. I cant see it being a problem although you would most likely still need to clamp to compress the joint. Although dowels would definitely keep everything aligned nicely.
  • Have ya seen my blog, on using a Radial arm saw? http://www.cigarboxnation.com/profiles/blog/list?user=3j6wfb9a2p0u4

    • oh if only i had a radial arm saw

    • so i ended up giving it another go by hand and slowly getting better, now i just need to pick which box to use306629226?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024306630399?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

    • Thanks Nick. That was essentially the first scarf joint ive managed to produce. Learnt alot from it so hopefully the next will be slightly better.
