scale length and different tunings?

hi everyone, i have built two 3 string cbgs and had em both tuned dad... great until i tried tunin em down to gdg and they're sounding sloppy n not good. the scale lengths are 26 and 26 1/2 inches. i am building another 3 string, do i need a shorter (or longer?) scale? or am i just being dumb n missing something? cheers, steve :0)

  • If you're tuning to GDG, use the strings closest to it. In this case, the A, D, and G strings (5, 4, 3, if I'm remembering the correct numbering). DAD, you'd use the top 3 strings, E, A, and D.

    Bonne chance, mon ami.
  • I don't know, but it makes sense that a shorter scale would make it easier to tune down (L'm eager to hear if someone has more experience with this). I use a 25.5 scale and it does get a little "sloppy" when I tune down, but not too bad. It helps if I pick closer to the bridge when it's tuned down a little.
  • cheers for that, no i haven't, will they need to be heavier?
  • did u change the strings
strings that sound good tuned DAd will sound slack and twangy tuned dow to GDg
the right gauge strings always important no matter the scale length
