Quick, hide your mags!

Am I losing it/have I remembered wrong? Maybe I'm losing my mind but I think I remember someone told me that a magnetic pickup can be placed INSIDE a box? Can I have the box's wooden lid between the pick up and the strings? I'd be careful to make sure there's still around a 1/4" between the strings and the pickup inside the box but before I go and build it all, can someone please tell me whether I'm remembering rightly? If it can be done, are there any drawbacks to doing it this way? My reason for wanting to is to have space for art work and keep the hardware that's on show to an absolute minimum for once.

Help appreciated and hereto begged for. Hope ya'll sleep better tonight than I'm managing to as well. Not before you've helped me out though haha.

Bear.

  • Yes. It might not be as loud and remember that anything touching your sound board will change it acoustically so I would avoid direct contact. However, pups don't work acoustically so if it's primarily an amplified sound you want then anything that reduces feedback problems will be beneficial. Personally I would avoid attaching anything to the soundboard.

    • Thanks Fomhorach. Hopefully nothing touching the sound board but we'll see how it works out and how well I measure by the final results I guess :)

  • yup  .  your  mind  is  safe .  it  can  be  done  .  a  mag  will  read  right  through a lid  . even as  thick as  1/4 .   possible  drawbacks  are  a  microphonic  pup  may pick  up  unwanted box   noise   like a piezo   . this  can  be solved   most  of the time  by   not  mounting the pup  right against  the    wood  lid  .  but  some  pickups sound great    mounted    against  it  .  try  a test first  .  either  leave a  tiny  space  ,  or  mount  it   touching the  lid .

space  between the strings and  pup  is  still  inportant  ,  usually   you are  ok  .  but  some  folks   add  "extention"  screws etc  through  the  lid  to  the  pup  to act as an  extender .  etc  .

now  take   a  bite  of that  confidence  an  get  er  dun  ;-)

    • Thanks Pick. Always there when needed. I reckon I'll try and take a bite of the apple that made Sleeping Beauty sleep first. 5:30am and I'm in dire need of some shut eye. I doubt I'll get any (again) but it's worth another try at least. Thanks again :)
