Piezo query

I've been reading bits and pieces about disc piezos around the site in preparation for installing some on my first build.

I bought a pre-wired kit with 2 small-ish disc piezos and had a couple questions about the installation.

1. I know (or at least think) if you've got just one, the recommendation is to stick it on the lowest string side of the neck, inside the lid, near the bridge. Is this correct? Either way, where abouts should do you think I should stick the second one?

2. Which side do I glue to the box and will super glue be suitable?

3. I've seen some people say that piezos pick up a lot of incidental noises, string and finger noise and such. I've also seen some people say they've stuck something over the piezo (like those little fabric feet you stick on chair legs so the don't scuff the floor), does this work, and if so, where abouts do I stick the thing?

  • Cover the piezos with foam tape, or bury them in hot glue or silicone... I use hot glue for gluing them down... it is up to you,..
  • If you have the same one I got I just stuck both on each side of the bridge.

    It sounds pretty good.

  • If you have two, I'd suggest one on each side of the neck, and near the bridge.  If you can, use some double sided tape or small dots of hot glue and try a few spots to see if you like the sound better.

Glue the flat side to the box.  Hot melt or double sided tape is better, see the third part.

Yes they will pick up everything.  You can tap on the box and it will sound like a drum if it is glues directly.  More isolation dampens the effect and also dampens the pickup from the strings, you have to find the balance that works for you.  The felt feet would go directly over the piezo's if you want to try them.

So if you want to explore the options, make your build so you can open the box and move the piezos or cover them or try different things.  Otherwise, just pick an option, try it and see what happens and learn from it for the next one.

Have fun and post your results!

  • Hi Holly I use a 27mm piezo disc I hot glue into a bottle cap and hot glue it to the underside of the neck on the larger g string side and directly under the bridge area I found a richer warmer sound than the lid ,just my 2 cents for what's its worth you can take it or leave it .good luck keep us posted .
