Fretboard overhang on License Plate Guitar

I am building a LPG with an old acoustic guitar neck that overhangs about 5" past the heel at the 12th.fret. Either I build the box 5" longer at the neck before the plate, or the fretboard is going to sit on the plate at least 4". What is the best thing to do? Didn't really want to cut the fretboard down as it adds strength to the neck, if I make the box longer it's going to be a pretty long guitar, and if I overlap the plate with the fretboard do I leave it loose or attach it to the plate? Any suggestions?

  • I'm thinking that since I'm making the box up from scratch, the best thing to do is shape it like this, at least at the neck, then I can keep the full length of the fretboard, and glue it down to the top, but not to the plate

    • As a departed friend who was into military vehicle restoration used to say, "you can make it as complicated as you want".

  • I would let the fretboard over hang the plate. Just make sure it sits high enough that it doesn't make contact with the plate or it will buzz.

    • So overhang it, but don't fix it to the plate? I was thinking of putting felt or rubber or something between them if it did overhang the plate, but I guess 4" or so overhang with a good gap between the plate should still be strong enough?
    • Anything making contact between the fretboard and the plate will dampen the resonation of the plate and affect the sound.

    • Alright, makes sense- thanks!
