First Build

Well i am almost done with my first build. I made the neck out of pine. I know that is a soft wood and I expect the neck will break. It is what I had. the build is rough. All I have is hand tools. My scroll saw is giving up the ghost and I have no band saw. Tell me what you think.

  • Your pine neck will probably warp or bend over time, but not a big deal!

Welcome to the addiction, have fun!

    • Thank you. I feels great to be able to work with my hands again. I am having fun with this and it will not be the last build.

    • Well got it together, strung it up and the neck bowed. I braced it but to no avail. Unplayable. Oh well it was fun. I will wait till I get more Poplar or Oak to make the neck. Not giving up.

  • Nice work, especially for a first build.

  • I like it, that's the same box I used for my first build. I suspect with the thin pine neck you'll have a lot of bowing though, so you may need to back that up with another board for the lower 12-15" to stiffen it (I did). Will it be fretless?
    • Yes it will be fretless. I was thinking the same thing as you.

      Thanks for the reply.

    • I was thinking about this. I did not sand the back of the neck flat. It still has the rounded edge. Do I need to sand it flat or leave it as is and then add the brace board.
