Building a neck

Hello all, I'm in the planning stage of my first build and have a question about the neck.

I'm planning on making mine with the neck through, a fret board and a heel(?) on the bottom from the inside of the box to somewhere out the rear.  I've seen plenty of pics and read up about gluing the whole thing together but was wondering about the length of the heel sticking out of the rear of the box. I haven't been able to find any pics with the dimensions.  Can someone help me with this?  Thanks in advance.

  • 1 to 1 1/2 inches is fine, my first build i left it at 3 1/2 and ended up needing a larger threaded rod (bridge) because there wasn't enough angle to hold it solidly in place. As mentioned already, when in doubt leave it long and you can cut to length when you're finished.

  • Since I dado my necks, my heel's purpose is to prevent the neck from bowing. My heel covers the neck from the strings to about 1.5 inches outside the box. (Past the end of the dado cut).
  • Like Jittery mentioned, you can always cut down if it's too long but adding to would be more of an issue. Try leaving just a little more than what you yourself would be too much then cut it down to where you feel is right after holding the finished item and playing it some. Enjoy your build.

  • No rules really.  The first one I did, I made the heel too long, but that was purely based on my personal aesthetic preference.  Guess what...cut the heel down and the guitar sounds exactly the same.  Amazing.

Only consideration is if you're planning on anchoring the strings to the heel.  In that case, leave yourself enough room.  How much is "enough"?   Up to you

  • I just measured my three CGBs and they were 1 3/8, 1 ½ and 1 ¾. Like most things CGB there is no standard answer.
