Box Acoustics

Here are a couple images of a box I would like to build into my 1st reso. My question: Do you think the box will play well acoustically? If so, I would probably add a piezo. If not, I would probably add a magnetic pup, likely the Electric Delta from Gitty. Before you say"'Do both at the same time!" I must say that I know absolutely nothing about electronics and doing both sounds pretty intimidating.

It measures 15" x 8 1/4" x 4 3/8" with a top that is 1/8".

Any way to estimate what she'll sound like??

  • I'm finally working on this one. Wondering if the string tension [3-string] will be so strong that it causes the tin lid to dimple...?? I have seen a pic somewhere of a build where there was a dog bowl underneath the lid. I wasn't planning on that and honestly don't understand the physics behind it.

Will the lid by itself be enough??

Can anyone point me to some info on building resonators?

And thanks for all the good comments so far!!

  • I expect it will sound pretty good due to its ample size.  What kind of box is it?

    • Gary--

I found the box at work. Evidently a small machine or some equipment came in it about 40 years ago. If you are asking what kind of wood it is, beats me. I don't know how to ID wood varieties.

    • I was just curious.  it is a good looking box.

  • T, I'd be asking how thick the lid and bottom are, and doing some tapping around on it to get a feel for the acoustic quality. If you have a good and a bad acoustic git for comparison, so much the better. If the top is thin enough I think you'll like it.
  • that   box should be  great  in  size and top  width .  wood type  may   be a small  factor    too,  but  looks  like a great  candidate  .  and  im  gonna  be  the  guy  that  says " both"  pup and piezo, .....   but with   compromise  ..

if  you are worried about  wiring  both together with a switch ,  .  do  them  separately, no switch ,    and use  2  jacks.   as an option.

    intimidation  gone  , and a cool  factor / conversation piece  added .    . ;-)

    good luck.
