Basic questions 101

I found this site through Shane Speal's other site, Scrapplehead, and I'm convinced I have to build one of these and add it to the family, because you just can't have too many instruments. Sorry if these questions have already been asked and answered; just point me in the right direction if they have:

  1. What is a good source for boxes? I see them on eBay, but I'm concerned it might be hit-or-miss. I live a few blocks from a beer & cigar distributor (great combination, right?) but I'm not keen on buying a whole box of Macanudos just to get the container.
  2. I see neck-through-body designs and necks that stop at the body with a heel similar to guitars...I assume for a first build the neck-through-body would be easier to work with.
Thanks in advance. I live in York, PA and I'm hoping to connect with Shane at some point to pick his brain.

Mark E.

  • Outstanding; thanks for your replies.

SHANE - thanks for your offer to let me test drive your CBGs. If we don't get together this week I'll catch up with you at First Cap on a Wednesday (I'll bring my mandolin). BTW...I'm listening to Surreal 2 now at work; great tunes!

  • The best way/place to find the boxes is at a tobacco store where they sell cigars. Either the empty boxes will be around possibly for sale or you could ask if they have empty boxes they would want to sell. The ebay way seems great if you want a bunch, or if buying off the internet is easier. Personally I enjoy going into the store and talking to the owners about what I am doing with the boxes.

Dave has a good point I'll agree the through the box neck is easier. There are plans here for the bolt on neck. I guess it is up to what you are comfortable with assembling.

And to search through; sometimes you might have to sift through discussions to find what you want to know. Just about every question has been asked. Post a pic when your done, have fun with it.
  • Mark, many of the local cigar shops have empty boxes for sale. Hell, just come out to my open mic at the First Cap on Wednesdays (and let me know you're coming) and I'll bring you a few.

Also, if you show up at the open mic (or even at my gig tomorrow at Blue Moon Cafe), you can hold, play and check out my collection of CBGs. I'll have my beat-to-hell Macanudo with me, too...and it's a great 'first time' type of build.

  • Hey Mark,
As one novice to another, I can say that the neck through body construction is much easier to do, you don't need elaborate internal bracing the other method may require.

As for a source of boxes, get 'em where you can I guess.
