For my 21st build, a 2 string fret less bass.

The box is built from mahogany plywood. The neck is maple, with a lacewood fretboard. It extends through the box, and is doubled up going through the body to compensate for the notch to accommodate the single coil pickup. I used a pair of Grover bass tuners, they are really well made. Right now it has roto sound strings on it and I love the sound but the fret less neck is demanding flat wounds. I strung it up with a 0.100" E and a 0.080" A string from a new set I had laying about and the neck doesn't mind the strain at all. I own 3 bass guitars but this is my first fretless and it sure plays nice. I will post some more pics tomorrow.

  • Hey Greg, That is a nice looking instrument! Do you get any volume out of it unplugged? I have been toying with the idea of a 2-string fretless CBG bass, using A and D silcone strings to try to get an upright sound. Needless to say, I'll be following this thread, with gratitude.

    • Well, the unplugged volume leaves a bit to be desired. I was just a little disappointed there. Maybe the next time I try one of these I won't put the neck through the box; I think a suspended soundboard would probably be louder.

    • Don't feel too bad.  Unplugged, even the Kala UBass isn't impressive.

  • I will probably be making mine either the size of a Kala UBass, or my 34" Samick Corsair mini bass.

  • That's cool Greg! I have a 30" scale fretless nearly finished right now, can't wait.

  • I like it! What's the scale length?

    • I made it  with a 34" scale, same as my 30-year old Fender Precision.

  • Very nice.  One of those on my to do list. Been wondering about which 2 strings to use.

    • Well, for my money I went with the lowest two. If you want a bass, you need those low notes. But then again I have been playing electric bass for several decades, so I am biased. On the other hand, I have no problem with my CBG's using the middle 4 or the thin 4 of a typical set of 6.
