How important is the break angle of the string from the nut to the machine heads? The tuners I got seem to be rather tall, but I should be able to wind the string in such a way it has a decent break angle. I'll use bone for the nut, but in the early stages will use a bolt to see how it does.
Will a disc piezo work well inside the box? I have a couple rod piezos, so I could put one of them in it too, but would rather use them on my guitars. I am going to use steel strings and may make it a 3-string. Walnut neck with oak fretboard so it should be plenty strong even w/o a truss rod- I hope! Still looking for a decent wood wine box to use, otherwise I'll use my Jabak 'coffee infused" cigar box which is a good size as well.
I have an adjustible bass bridge too, but might see if I can just feed the strings thru the neck and make a bone bridge on this one. See what I learn in the process.
I imagine you could get away with a pretty low action if you go fretless. My neck is ready for frets. Hope it sounds good- would love to take it out and play it when I get it done.
i got a pic of the headstock i glued/screwed together. its something definitely different. I think for now I'm going to use some of the extra parts from a 3 string uncle crow I built late last year. To do the fingerboard fretless I'm going to go ahead and finish up the wood with filing, sandpaper, oil, etc before assembling. At the moment I'm a tad leery about the 34" scale but I can just slide the bridge forward to shorten the scale if necessary. The oak 2x2 is very straight.
This will have a small box with a pickup inside. I'm sure it would be pretty pathetic acoustic only. I may actually want to make this a plain fretless instead. So definitely would need to finish the fretboard surface first. Any idea about nut/bridge height for fretless?
You should be using a size that gives a good string height over the neck and a height that remains constant all the way up the neck. I've been playing bass for over 40 years but I've never seen a bass being used with a slide so I have no idea what string height would be good.
Nuts and bolts are so inexpensive that I'm sure you could experiment. Are you using as acoustic, electric or both. What type of strings will / or are you asing and what scale length ?
