I am struglling on how to add an adjustable shoulder rest to my cigar box fiddle. I saw Diane in Chicago fiddle at a workshop in madison and thought it was really great, and looking at Steve Millers fiddles inspired me to make a modification of his design. The fiddle is done, I really like it, although I can't play for rubbish (as the British say). It would be nice to be able to put an adjustable shoulder rest on the fiddle. I would post a picture of it if I only knew how. Any ideas on the shoulder rest?

Yes, Elwood, I saw her pictures and her fiddle. It is very nice and sounds good too, She has a pad that is attiched to the end pin. That is an idea, but I am looking for other ideas also. I know cildren sometimes use sponge pads for shoulder rests and I may resort to that, but I really don't want rubbier bands to attach it to the fiddle. She has a really nice hardinger fiddle I saw also, she is very talented.
Check out my builds and pictures. I've built two fiddles; critical to the process is: 1st, chose a box thin enough for a shoulder rest to fit on (shoud be 1 & 3/4" or less) to fit on; 2nd, cut out a section from the middle of the box to reduce its thickness to about 1 & 1/2", which is perfect for a should rest to fit on; 3rd, cut a slash far enough down the side of the box so that you can insert the bottom flange lip of the shoulder rest into it. Those would be my suggestions.
I am not sure we are talking about the same thing, are you thinking of a chin rest? Or am I picturing this all wrong?
So right, I read that too fast, I'm wrong! For a "shoulder rest", I used one of those inexpensive foam ones, cut to length and stuck on the bottom with two-way tape.
Tim,
I Think that's what I will do too. until and if I find somthing better. thanks
