If I pointed my amp's speaker down so it's facing the carpet, and i then played some loud riffs on it, would that damage the speaker? I'm curious about what it would sound like.

I'm no expert but I suspect that it wouldn't do any harm at all. It's unlikely you'll get an air tight seal against carpet and the back is probably open or ported anyway.
