Hi, I'm trying to build my cigar box mandolin, and I have no clue what to use for the neck wood, it will be a thru neck but I don't know what wood to use, preferably something good, but not super expensive, any advice helps, thanks

thanks mate. Dude go to bunnings and buy some merbau or redgum decking. Glue three lengths together (for a neck thru mando you'll want around 600-700mm, for a full scale cog around a metre. clean em up, turn the bastard on its side, couple mm of vegemite and there you are :)

Hey, just a question, if I stick the decking together, will I still need to put a truss rod in the neck?
You'll need a truss rod if the neck starts to bend and you want to straighten it out..
Sorry, there is no simple answer. I personally would happily proceed without, but I also think most mandolin (and violin) necks are absurdly skinny..
The string tension on a mandolin is tremendous, but the strings have little leverage to do harm compared to a guitar or bass by virtue of the diminished scale length..
I say go for it, but if you want a super skinny neck you might find that poor advice indeed

Oh, if I use a thru neck like that, will I need a truss rod, and will it hold eight strings or do I stick with 4

Woah, vegemite, what's that do?, I am in favour of it, as I love the smell, but why apply it to the neck, and thanks for the help
Qs
6-7 hundred mm thick when they're joined?
What type of glue is recommended, standard wood glue?
Plus to all, does anyone know where I can get the sizes for a mandolin neck
And are the planks joined like this http://www.cigarboxnation.com/forum/topics/merbau

Ok,haha, another great use for it, I usually just use it for degreasing engines, haha:), ok so it should be 6-7 hundred mm thick, and the full size should be about a metre long, right?, and as to my previous question, what glues should be used

I see you are in Oz. Here's a list of Aussie hardwoods: http://www.woodsolutions.com.au/Wood-Species/Hardwood-Species/
