So I've got a neck that's fretted and ready to go.  I'd like to put a little stronger finish on it.  I've had good experience with wipe on poly's in the past, but I'm worried about it gunking up my fret board.  For those that have used the wipe on's do you have any helpful hints.  Do you thin the poly? Avoid the frets? just wipe it on and go?

Thanks

Ben

  • I have used spray on clear poly on a few necks. Smoothing with steel wool between coats takes it right off the fret wire.
  • Let us know! I've used wiping varnish "aka 'tung' oil" which worked pretty well, but took a long time. How is the poly? Source?

  • Make a mock up FB from cutoff pieces of the same material, wipe on the finish and record the results. Try different methods on fretted scrape and then you will know how the particular wood used will react to the finish and technique. Good Luck!
