Beginner.  Starting my fourth build.  Used the eq-7545r on the first three with great success.  Its ok.  Price is right and comes ready to plug in and go.  The curves are a bit of a hassle to deal with but can be mitigated with some foam for a  more attractive fit but still comes out looking like its "rigged".  For this build I'm looking for something a little more minimalist and flush fitting for a CBG.  Seen a few on ebay and Amazon.  Gitty has a small one designed for ukes for $20.

Any recommendations on a decent alternative?

  • Shane has a preamp project using a cigar box in his new book, like Taffy mentioned. Definitely more economical than outfitting all your guits with preamps & you won’t have to worry about them fitting flush? If you’re looking for something really  good, then spend the money on a Fishman or L.R. Baggs , they’re pro stage quality.

  • If you want to go minimalist, consider using a pedal as your preamp.  The guitar only needs a jack this way.

    • Hi, I couldn't recommend a pre amp, it depends on what you have to spend, for a CBG possibly cheap Chinese units would do a reasonable job.

But what I would suggest is to mount a Pre amp in a box and make your own pedal. nI the photo I was just explaining this to a customer using an old pedal old box I had made some time ago, and a new preamp. This way you can have 4 CBG's all using the same EQ/pre amp.

  • I really like my Cherub GT-6. It has onboard effects and it is flat mounted.

You can find them on Ebay for about $30.
