Volume control

I have a problem with the volume control on one of my builds. I can turn it all the way to no volume but as soon as I turn it a little bit it goes right to high volume. There’s no way to have it at low or medium volume. It won’t change gradually. I’ve never had this happen on any other build I made. I wonder if anyone else ever had something like this happen or if anyone has any advice on why it’s happening or how to fix it.

  • Thanks Kerrigan. I did and they’re sending a new setup. It is defective. Took the whole guitar apart and the volume pot is definitely messed up

  • Jon, anything new will seem like that, but if you plan on building guitars, you should definitely learn it. Scroll down to the lower right, you’ll see the link to cigarboxguitar.com database. There’s tons of that info explained there: strings, tunings, pots, pickups, etc., a great source for beginners & even novice builders?
Onto your problem, if you can verify that the wiring is correct, sometimes the best make mistakes, it’s just human? If it is correct, then try using some Electronics/Tuner cleaner on the pot, there may be residue on the resistance track? Just simply spray it inside the pot & rotate it from side to the other. If it improves, you’re good. If not contact the supplier? Good luck :)

  • was it pre wired or did you wire it yourself?  could be the pot is wired in backwards.

    • See my response to Brian, Tim, to answer your query.

  • You either have the wrong taper, a dirty pot or the pot is no good. But it’s hard to say, a little more info would help? Pot resistance, Taper, wiring diagram?

    • I took it apart and was going to just put in a new tone/volume/jack setup when I saw and remembered it's a prewired setup

not sure if something's defective in the package. I'm not sure what I could have done wrong installing it. There was nothing to do but put it in, and then lead the ground wire to the tailpiece. I am a novice builder so much of the technical jargon that makes sense to a lot of the builders here is Greek to me simply because of my inexperience.

      • Sounds like you got a defective volume pot. MGB's customer service is amazing, contact Mike, he'll take care of you.

        •  I'm not one to bag on companies publicly, but I feel I should say that I have had a different experience with MGB. That is all.

  •  I'm no expert, just finished my first board, but sounds like you might have the wrong potentiometer or it's defective. I'd check that first.
