There's a growing movement of people transforming old skateboards into guitars and basses. Like cigar box guitars, there are no rules to these creations and designs vary wildly, from freakish lap slide beast to traditional looking instruments.
One company making a lot of waves in the scene is Argentinian based Skate Guitar Project:
The Skate Guitar Project operates a Facebook page, featuring many pictures, videos and ideas.
One of the earliest skate guitars documented appears on the cover Surf Punks 1980 album release, My Beach. It was built by Drew Steel with help from Randy Zacuto of Mighty Mite in California. (See full info below). But first, we've actually found (lip synched) live footage of them performing with it!
Other styles of skateboard guitars include lap steels...even very primal ones such as the "Skiddley Bow" performed by Joe Bent of Left Lane Cruiser:
Have you built a skateboard guitar? Got pics or videos? Post them in comments below!

I like PINBALL machine playfields better .. ;-)
Kool Diddley, I like how you left the rails & skid plate, even the nose guard
I built this one a few years back ...
Reverb has been featuring lapsteel boards for a number of years, I had one & it sounds great
Build #8 : This one I made for my nephew Angus for Christmas, from his old damaged long board Skateboard, cut down and reshaped into a 4 string guitar GDGB, with volume and tone. Tassie Oak fret board with Jumbo frets and screws for position markers, neck made from off cut from Ikea benchtop. All in all very proud of this one and it plays and sounds fantastic.
