Upright bass strings

I'm planning on starting an upright bass with a wine box and am considering using lawn trimmer line for the strings: because a) real bass strings are expensive and b) I think they would be at a lower tension. I've seen several videos where trimmer line was used but there is always amplification. Does anyone know how the trimmer line sounds without pickups?  Also any recommendations on the sizes?

  • I use the "Slap Happy Weed Wacker" strings on my upright four string washtub.   Had the same set on for a couple of years and I like them.  About $25 a set.

    Random Ebay Link from search.

I also have a Plastic bucket bass with actual trimmer line.  I don't remember the gauges, I only had 2 sizes but i guess it sounds ok, jut not too loud.

    Good Luck!
