Hey all,

Found a good way to apply Tung/Danish oil.

Fold up a paper coffee filter and use it to work the oil in. It's lint free and polishes at the same time.

Works great and only pennies per filter.

Another thing I've found is to wipe the body/neck down with a little mineral spirits first to remove all the dust.

I use naphtha (basically zippo lighter fluid) instead of mineral spirits in this case. It won't swell the wood up but removes the dust and dries faster than mineral spirits.

I'll have to try the coffee filters. I've been using second hand store polyester bed sheet swatches but the coffee filters seem a lot more convenient. Thanks for the tip!

I got the idea by watching some YouTube videos by Crimson Custom Guitars in the UK. He uses some sort of paper towel that is made with clay (clay?) but doesn't say what it really is. Great videos on finishes and neck/fret work.

Ken, I have seen Ben Crow's videos at Crimson Guitars. Clay is in all commercial paper towels, and in many forms of facial tissue. One reason why we can get sore noses during a cold, from constant rubbing/wiping.

Really, I never knew that about the clay. learn something new every day.

I've used plain old paper towels in the past 'cause that is what I had but to many fuzzies left behind.

Thanks for the tip! I use tung oil all the time but didn't know that. I'll try it next time for sure! :)

I use tung oil on most of my necks. I typically use old t-shirts as rags. The cotton has very little lint and leaves no fuzzies behind. I hope everyone remembers to dispose of oiled rags etc properly as the fumes are flammable and can ignite very quickly in the wrong situation. As for dust, I use a compressor  to blow off any dust before I add a finish.
