Tuners

I haven't seen this mentioned so hopefully it will help some other builders. While building my CBG kit, the peghead arrangement required the outside strings to wind on from the outside and the inside strings to wind from the inside. This resulted in two tuners tightening the normal CCW direction and the other two tightening in the opposite, CW, direction. By reversing the outside winding tuners, they now all tighten in the familiar CCW direction.

  • I had some tuning machines like yours -- tho a LOT cheaper and poorly made and I noticed when i put them in like your bottom two (two outside strings), the gears did slip. Eventually I turned them all like the top two (middle strings).
  • I see your point. The string force will try to separate the gears on the reversed tuners. With new tuning machines and tight bushing it shouldn't be a problem for quite a while. Thanks for the feedback.
  • normally, its best to mount that type of tuner so that the leverage from the string tension keeps the gears tight together. going against this basic mechanical law could cause future problems like early wear and slippage. i wouldnt change that one tho, it should work fine for a long time.
