Psycho knob preamp wiring dilemma

Hi everyone i am building an Anzac biscuit for someone and i have fitted a fishman preamp a cbgitty humbucker pickup and a psycho knob along with volume and tone 500KOhm pots

I have changed out the stereo jack that comes with the preamp to a mono jack and I was wondering if anyone had any wiring diagrams or if there was any videos showing how to wire them all together.

I have changed out the stereo jack that comes with the preamp to a mono jack but I am stuck on how to wire it all together.

If anyone can help I will be eternally grateful and thankful. Thanks Mal

  • Hi again Mal, the y cord I used I made up myself.

  • Mal, you didn't state which model Fishman preamp you're using? It could be that the one you're using is made for piezos, did it come with a piezo?

  • Hi Mal, I found photos of the guitar with two pickups and two Jacks.

    • Wow what a cool guitar Taff - if it can't be done i may have to go that way also.

The only worry I have is whether we can get a lead with the Y junction here in NZ or if I have to order overseas. Thankyou Taff

  • Hi Mal, yes the system worked well in two of the solid-body guitars I used it in. Sorry, I can't post a video. The magnetic pickup was used to just add a more robust bottom end to the thinner-sounding piezo pickup. Or of course, one could have full electric sound.

  • Thanks BrianQ for your advise yes this was at the request of the client he purchased the preamp, humbucker, psycho knob and the Anzac biscuit tin and I supplied the neck material and other small parts and are building a 3 string for him with all those electronics in it. When I first wired it all up it wouldn't go at all then I read on another post here, that someone said that all the other parts wouldn't work with the output jack that came with the fishman preamp and to change it to a standard mono output jack.

So I did and it all worked but I'm having trouble with the volume sounding real scratchy and screeches when you turn the volume up and down, which is why I asked the question what am I doing wrong, and, was there anyone who had wired all these electronics my client wants on his guitar, with success and if they had a wiring diagram they would consider sharing.

This is the first time I have wired in so much in a guitar so i have always been able to work it out but this one has been challenging to say the least and I need some help. Thankyou BrianQ I appreciate your recommendations

    Cheers Mal

    • I was confused when you mentioned the preamp because you didn't mention it was for a piezo, I thought you were using it for the humbucker? Usually running a capacitor across the output wires of the piezo will stop the feedback? Your problem is that boost/distortion effects aren't compatible with piezos, the impedance is way too far off, so the psycho knob will scream like a banshee? It will work with the humbucker, but not both pickups, so it's best to wire it to the humbucker only? You can also wire the two on a 3-way switch just like a two pickup guitar, with the middle position being both pickups? But the psycho knob can't be used when running both pickups? You can make your own Y-cable, all you have to do is run two groups in parallel connected to the source wire? I will draw a diagram & post it, it's super simple?

      • Oh wow thankyou so much brianQ that will help immensely - I'm sorry I didn't make myself very clear from the start. My client wanted all these options loaded into the guitar and he purchased and supplied the preamp with rod piezo, deltabucker humbucker pickup and psycho knob from cbgitty and I have not installed the preamp with piezo or psycho knob before,  so it's a big learning curve for me. I really appreciate all your advise - thankyou cheers Mal

    • I would go with just the psycho knob, the screeching you are hearing is feedback, the two circuits are slamming boosted signal at each other, creating oscillation, a common sign of "too much"?

  • Hi Mal, I thought I would leave others to give a more detailed answer as I did not know what a Psycho knob was. I have made guitars with the setup you are asking about. I do not have a wiring diagram. What I did was to wire two systems wired as they would be if only one were being fitted to the guitar, so, two output jacks. two separate circuits. Then I used either two leads into two amps or into two channels on the same amp. But mostly I used a Y lead putting both pickups into the same amp. A volume pot on each pickup controlled the mix.

I have used pre-amps on mag pickups but they were low-impedance humbuckers.

    Sorry I can't help more, I'm more of a "woody" than a"techy".

    Taff
