As for equipment, in my experience, decent stuff is much nicer to use but it's expensive. Is there a local gym you can visit on a 'pay-as-you-go' basis ? That way, you could do a few sessions, try out different equipment and see what you like before you buy. Maybe ask one of their trainers for advice, depending on your aims.
Whatever you do, start gradually and visit the doc before starting if you have any health worries. Oh, and enjoy it !
