  • Waiting waiting waiting on my diods to arrive.

  • I put my Black Ice in a Timex watch tin with a in jack, out jack, A250k pot for driver and a 2-way switch for bypass. Bypassing the Black Ice acts like a signal boost using the driver pot so it's like having 2 effects in one.306570647?profile=original306572029?profile=original

  • Awesome that your trying this Wayfinder. Hope to hear something good soon!

    • Woo! \o/

Let's get this thing going right?

He's right wayfinder.. when you crack this, let us all know how it's done.

  • Not to be a pendantic descriptionist but...

technically black ice is not overdrive, its a clip effect, but with the same results, the nice pretty rounded tips of the sine wave are clipped flat giving the pre-amp overdriving the amp sound.

  • You need hot pick-ups for this to work.
8.4K ohms is not power or even voltage, it depends on the number of turns of wire the pickup has. More winding means more resistance (ohms).
but it also means more output voltage.
Like overwound pickups which are hotter. eg Texas Special pickups
I tried it quite some time ago and it wasn't worth it.
But I don't remember what I used to try it...
  • From what I've been reading about in different places, it takes a very sensitive diode to make this happen or the ability to vary the voltage going into a non sensitive diode until you hit the sweet spot.

  • From what I've seen on youtube it takes some energy to do this. With a min of 8.56 to drive the effect.

This would also make a great outboard effect for someone who doesn't what to use batteries or doesn't have access to extra power.
    • The guitar that I put the Black Ice into had 500k pots and worked fine. Latter I took the Black Ice out, put it in a shaver tin with a bypass switch and a 250k volume pot. So signal comes into the tin to the volume, to the switch, to the Black Ice and out or just out. The result was a slight signal boost without the Black Ice and no drop in volume with the Black Ice.

The Black Ice was worth the 20 Bucks I paid, not the best OD/Distortion effect but is worth the money. I put in the tin as a pedal so I could use it with all my guitars.

    • Yeah. We could definitely use some of that!
