    Hi Andrew, it depends on the type of music you are intending to play and who with.For instance, if playing with others, say guitars, and playing Blugrass style, I would suggest steel strings, for volume and a traditional sound.

    If on the other hand you are just acompianing yourself, eg: clawhammer, frailing style, then maybe nylon may me the better choice.

    I have just had an enquiry to build a Minstrel Banjo, they are nylon strung and fretless. Check both styles out, and make your decision. Bluegrass and Clawhammer and Minstel Banjo.

    If you want it to sound like a banjo, then use steel strings?
