April Mae & the Junebugs: "Blue Moon" the latest in The SUN Studio Sessions Video Series.
Recorded live at the historic and legendary SUN Studios in Memphis during the recording of their album SUN Kissed! Filmed on location at SUN and the Victrola Dance Hall in York, PA.
This new video is one in a series of videos being released showcasing the music of their Sun Kissed album, and the incredible experience of recording at Sun.
On their their NPR artist feature [ Podcast Link ] the trio talked about their experience recording at Sun Studios in Memphis. The legendary studio where the tiles still vibrate with the reverberations of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash. A rich musical history that spawned the Sun Records dramatic series airing on CMT - County Music Television.
"Blue Moon" was recorded live at Sun Studios by Grammy Award winning Engineer and Producer Matt Ross-Spang. The song "Blue Moon" was chosen by April Mae, as an homage to Elvis Presley and his Blue Moon Boys, Scotty Moore and Bill Black.
"Blue Moon is my favorite song that Elvis recorded at Sun. Intimate and ethereal, with a deep sense of longing and sweet hopefulness."
Engineer Matt Ross-Spang surprised Mae with a very unique vintage microphone for her to sing into for this recording.
Indeed it was the same exact model that Sam Phillips had Elvis use to record "Blue Moon." Looking like a cross between a sleek tapered pencil mic that opens into a disc flower at the top, the microphone gets a cameo, as does the X on the floor of the studio that marks the spot where Elvis stood while recording.
"Those little details are part of the magic of recording in such a sacred musical space, I wanted to share those visual nuances with people who have never been there, and for that fun moment of recognition from folks who have!"
Produced by film editor and videographer Joe Nugent, the video features live footage filmed by Robert Rowen of Memphis, during the recording sessions for the album.
The video then takes visual leap from the Sun Studios session in Memphis, northbound to York, PA to included sequences filmed by Joe Nugent. York is home to the Pennsylvania Cigar Box Guitar Festival, and the Victrola Dance Hall, where April Mae & The June Bugs have held featured performances.
Musicians on the session include "Catfish" Dave Fecca on cigar box guitar, Christopher Davis-Shannon on upright bass, with April Mae on vocals.
