I wanted to pass something on sooner rather than later...
I tried something with staining the fret board that might be useful to you. I use Home Depot 'Hobby Boards' for fretboards. Several different woods, poplar, red oak, and walnut. Usually use the poplar, it's cheapest and right now my stor has some good wood, clear and white (no green hue), but I just got my Gitty fret saw and I want to upgrade the wood a little, so I got some walnut. Fairly good selection of 1.5X.25 boards but for walnut I think they are a little light, so I tried some stain.
'Ipswich Pine' by Varithane. Man, did that make the walnut look nice. Darkened it a good amount and gave it a nice warm color. Might lean very slightly toward a mahogany color, but I don't care. It looks VERY nice....
This is an earlier pic of the build, but many things have changed. No grill, no knobs, different pup ring. That's not the fret board, but it's pretty close, though this one leans a little red rather than yellow. Should be done this weekend.
I found these on my desk this morning at work...
