So, with my builds I've made sure that I only cut enough wood out of the neck inside the box so that I can glue the box lid directly to the neck.

But looking through some of the plans I noticed that they take out WAY more wood than I do...

what's the "better" approach?

Well, what do you want to accomplish? There are a couple of ways to get the neck to the lid. What you are doing is correct in that you only remove the depth of the lid. However there are other methods and tricks we use. I personally make a sound recess -- a 1/8" deep recess which starts ~1" from either end of the lid recess. This way the lid resonates/vibrates more freely. Others have made the same thing only deeper. Its personal choice. If you do this tho, you will need to make sure the neck is reinforced in some way. See the pic below from Dave Armstrong:

Note how deep his sound recess is (where the piezo is). Also note that he has a recess for the lid and extra neck on the bottom. I don't make my sound recess that deep (mine are ~1/8") but you get the idea. -- WY

I see, because using a 1x2 it gets pretty thin if you take too much... any suggestions on reinforcement?
Si! As you see in the diagram, the neck was made from a single piece. You can do this OR you can take the 1x2 (.75"x1.5") stick and add more to that area. Simply cut roughly the length you need from the end of the 1x2 and glue it in to the back of the neck. Cut the recesses as needed and shape the heel as you wish.

Keep in mind, this is definitely not the only way you accomplish what you are asking for... Others have their methods and madness'.

Right. Thanks for the help. I was just trying to see what the general concensous was. I don't know why I didn't think about added a support piece because I butchered a cut on a neck piece I was working on... but I'll just fix it with a brace.
Just FYI; similar to the diagram, I actually laminated two 1x3 pieces of oak, with a 1/4" x 3 piece of Poplar in the middle. That gave me a lot more freedom to decide how much I would hack off.
I cheat a bit. What I cut out to make the neck recess, I go back and REGLUE that same PIECE to the underside of the neck to reinforce it. In other words what I take off the "top" area for clearance, I put back underneath to gain back the strength. It doesn take but a few seconds and you use the slice you would have thrown away .
Thats how I do it.
