I'm planning on making and OM with a Gurkha Cellar Reserve box. I'm going to make the scale short as i can, 20".  I am going to electrify it. Now the main question is do i make a proper Mandolin with 8 strings, or more of a 4 string CBG tuned GDAE? I play mandolin already and have made an 8 sting CBM and a 4 string CBM. The idea is to make a new and different instrument that i can tune like my Mandolin GDAE but can play more like a guitar. Thoughts?

Thanks

  • I have also been contemplating building one of these or a Mandola or Mandocello. I have yet to settle on one of these. Most of my CBG's are 4 stringers, so I'm leaning more to a 8 string build at this point.

Most examples of a OM have been 4 strings at 21" scale tuned G/D/A/E  using the 46-32-22-12 gauge strings.
