hello there was an article a whle back that had a guy on here talking about taking a japenese guitar and replacing the bridge with a reso top.

That was probably Dave Lynas.
Google Resonator Guitar Build and you'll find a few links to sites where a regular acoustic is converted to a resonator. It is do-able, but you will need some clever woodwork to deal with the half of the original sound hole that will be outside the circle of the new cone.
