I'm Shane Speal, the guy who started this website a few years ago. Lately, I've been filming simple "How to Play Cigar Box Guitar" videos to help everyone get better on these awesome instruments.
If you've missed the video links, I've compiled everything into one Youtube playlist at
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpET_ZZI7rmROAInFkbD9szyuIXn2zM-T
I've got a definite style to my playing and have learned lots of tricks and cool short-cuts since I started playing these things almost 20 years ago. Use this forum for the following:
- What type of lessons would you like to learn?
- Do you have any questions on the videos already posted?
- If you're a fan of my music, are there any of my songs that you want explained?
Can you do me one favor? Can you post the following status on your Facebook today:
Have you seen the new video series, "How to Play Cigar Box Guitar?" Easy stuff to learn. Cool licks that sound great. Link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpET_ZZI7rmROAInFkbD9szyuIXn2zM-T
Ok, that's all. Ask away. Trolling comments and threadjacks will be deleted

4 string lessons. Great point. I have done tunings and such, but it's a subject that I can really expand upon. As far as the 3 String Double Coursed lesson, let me think about that. Mine is tuned to a baritone open C tuning. Very dark and evil sounding.
Summer concert/fest season is over. I'm now looking to do more vids and such.
i would like to request more 4 string lessons . i built one and it just seems like the 4th string is in the way .
Thank you for posting your lessons . ive learned alot from them .
The more videos I make, the more I realize how little I know about playing. I have a small mojo bag full of tricks that are twisted and turned slightly between songs.
...Gonna need to spend some time learning and inventing new stuff this winter.
Shane, thanks for the inspiration. I'm watching and learning every day. Lots of good tips. :)>

Shane I would love to see some of your ideas on how you record your songs. I Think your cd Shane Speal has my favorite sound of all your recordings including 12 stones. How do you get that to happen? I also would love to see Billiepringle. I can not wait for the diddly bow stuff to get out there as well
That's a tough one, Matt. When I write a song, I can hear the secondary parts in my head...the rhythm, harmonies, polyrhythms, etc. It's a tough thing to teach in a video. Lemme think about this.
ever thought of posting tabs?
No. I'm sort of an "anti-music theory guy." I'd rather teach in the old oral tradition method. "Sit down and watch me play this, son... Follow my fingers and you'll be ok."
Tabs are cold and heartless to me. They only show you where the notes go. They don't tell you why. I'd rather show my little tricks and cheats so that the viewer can be inspired to make their own music from these sample ideas.
