The wire from the rod to the 2.5mm jack plug can be cut to allow you to add a volume pot (I use 250K others use higher or lower)
The wire consists of an outer braided silver carrying the ground part of the circuit (and acting as a shield for the live wire) and a plastic coated live wire inside. Once cut you can tease the braid to one side and twist to give a negative and carefully strip a little off the inner plastic sleeve to find the live wire. as below
