While waiting for my CBG parts I was browsing CBG videos and I saw this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gWign-qR-o

How can it be so loud even thou the neck is dampening the whole soundboard? What mechanics are working there? It goes against all my limited understanding. Should not the soundboard be as light as possible?

  • After watching the video and watching Ben tune it, you can see the bow in the soundboard as the fly bridge pushes it down. The neck is screwed to the soundboard in 2 places . It also looks like the neck is on the bottom of the cigar box which is usually thinner plywood. there must be enough freedom in the soundboard to vibrate because it is loud.

Caution though it is miced up so it might not seem as loud in person.

  • The floating Bridge doesn’t touch the Neck, so it transfers the vibration straight to the Box, making it louder? If the bridge were resting on the Neck it would be dampened some, also on a build like this, you would elevate the Neck above the Box at the front/back of the Soundboard as to allow it to vibrate freely, but this is the result of people who have built many cbg’s. Gitty’s in-house crew has some very talented builders?
