I have a couple of kids that have been hounding me to make them something. They are pretty young and I don't want to discourage them I am thinking something along the lines of a canjo might be cool. Does anyone have some measurements or a drawing they would not mind sharing. I'd like to not reinvent the wheel if I don't have to. Thanks for your help

Hi,
If you are happy to use recycled parts (off a 3/4 sized guitar - the necks come up fairly frequently in the UK) these were fairly easy to make for my boys.
If you are interested I would be happy to post a few notes and more pictures. I realise you may prefer to make it all yourself - whichever path you go down I am sure the children will love it!

There is a great and esy version of a canjo, called a Kankara (I think) from japan. IF you search for it the diagrams are really self explanatory. basically its a CBG neck with the machine heads on the side classical guitar style, so hardly any shaping for good string retention angle...
If you want to fret it then its important to make enough of a groove in the neck thru body design to allow the can and its lip to be beneath the fret/finger board. Poke it through the other end and tie the strings off with either loops or make a tail peice or adapt the violin thing of a tailpiece held on by something...ahh the possibilities!
