Going nuts looking for a basic "A" shape headstock template. On both my builds, getting the machine head spacing and position has been shall we say somewhat difficult.

My Stewmac tuner hole jig has them spaced at 1 3/8” apart, but that’s not concrete, companies doing different things these days? usually 3/8”-1/2” in from the edge of the headstock, you could do what Taff said & draw out the headstock on something? Measure out holes on one half of headstock on a paper template & just mirror it on the other side & it’ll match up? You’ll get better at lining them up as you build more, eventually developing your own template? Here’s something a friend sent me, it might help you? Happy building :)
That's good. Any idea what the short end flat measures at, or what the angles are? I'm not good at math.
I used to have a CAM, and making drawings was easy. I'll have to see if I can get it running again.
All I know is what’s there? I’ll ask where he got the template from tho, maybe there’s more info? But the basics are there?
Hi James, I would have thought that earlier responses to your question on this would have saved you going nuts. I think it a relatively easy exercise. Cut the shape you want using a stiff paper or thin card, place it on the end of the neck/fingerboard, plot the best string projection to the desired tuner post position and mark it.
At times there may not be a direct path for the string from nut to tuner post, so an intermediate post in the form of a screw, or better, can be positioned to redirect string to tuner post.
If you are looking for somebody else's template, you may find you'll have to modify it anyway. It's easy, and quicker and more satisfying, I think, to design my own.
