Well-timed post for me, Mark. Thank you for getting it started, as I would like to know the same thing. I haven't put anything on the bodies of my guitars, preferring the worn look. After three years, some are looking about perfect for my liking and I am interested now in preserving that look. I use linseed oil on the necks.
My first build was an Undercrown box, I used matte spray varnish, still looks great. Pic shows it next to an unfinished box. Pic is actually in this same forum from 2016
Make all your cuts & drill all your holes first, so you can get all the sanding out of the way. Otherwise, you’ll have to do touch ups on the finish if you do it first? As for Finish, just don’t buy anything cheap? Varathane, MinWax, Watco, Zinsser are all great brands & they make high-gloss to no-gloss finishes? Watco & MinWax make great wipe-on Poly finishes that are awesome for cbg’s? Cheers :)

It was a spray can, either Minwax or Varathane. I attached a long scrap where the neck goes and was able to spray all sides at once, 2-3 coats.
