It comes as an after thought now that I've built the CBG, but fortunately I had the foresight to figure I'd be making some changes!! I built it so that  can be opened it with 3 screws and not mess with the innards or strings. I'd like to have both tone and volume control, but don't know (1)what type of set-up or (2)where to put the pick-up's once I get the unit. Any help on either topic would be much appreciated!

  • Ha, I discovered the volume problem.  Because of the shallowness of the box, the bottom three strings didn't resonate loud enough....solution, use a thumb pick, no electrifying necessary.

    • Ha!Awsome!

  • Well that has a bit of a mike Lowe stink about it...
    Nice.

I kinda agree in that many top resonator performers including the late bob brozman, mike auldrige, lotta those bluegrass guys won't go anywhere near any kind of pickup at all, it's straight into a mic for those guys..

However a magnetic pickup on a reso will still definitely sound like a reso, I know this cos I have several, including a 1930s dobro with a 1950s Gibson soapbar (no, I didn't do it...)
The pickup 'picks up' on the strings it's true, but the strings are singing on a big old cone, so this imparts some distinctive qualities on the way the string sounds, and is 'picked up'.. Only stands to reason if people claim to be able to hear the difference between swamp ash and alder and mahogany right? I mean a well and a cone is a much bigger departure than swapping out planks.

I think piezos, and certainly cheap buzzers etc emphasise entirely the wrong part of the spectrum for a resonator, (I confess I hate em in most everything tho). They're just too shrill and toppy, with no warmth or girth. Personally I like a mag pup hidden inside and pointed at the cone. Because you appear to have a brass (ie non ferrous) cone I'd be looking at a bolt through its centre at the biscuit there.
    • Wow thats cool,I didn't plan on mic'n an amp;I want the straight CBG sound.CBG mic'd w/ a condenser,No amp.
