Has any of you  wise gentlemen (I use   the  term  loosely , ) ever given any thought to putting together a Doors  tribute album?  I have no   knowledge  of  how  this  could be done  but it   might stretch  some of our more talented pickers.

  • I pulled together the Townes Van Zandt tribute album a few years ago, and there have been Rolling Stones, Beatles, Neil Young, Metallica and Blind Willie Jonson tribute albums, just to name a few, as well as an original blues tunes album, and several Christmas albums. Typically the way it works is someone like yourself proposes an album, and also offers to coordinate song compilation, re-recording, CD / mp3 duplication, artwork, packaging, and distribution, as well as recording a song or two yourself for inclusion. Go read the threads on the aforementioned albums, as they are highly informative on how to do this over the Interweb. Think hard about how much time you have and will need to do this, and be brutally realistic about this assessment. Lots of people here want nearly-instantaneous results, primarily because they have no earthly idea how much time, thought and real effort all of the above requires. It took several months to do the Townes album, because I'm a busy guy with multiple commitments. Other people have been able to get albums done within a month to a month and a half, primarily because they are semi- to fully retired, and can spend all day ( and night) working on a given project.

It looks like a steep learning curve, but it's very rewarding.
