Like my pickup winder, it's an eye-sore, but this pickup tester works for what I need and it was cheap. Built from junk around the house.

I've done some very similar experiments on a limited scale and got them to work to varying degrees using different configurations. All I can tell you is that it will probably work to some degree. Whether or not you like it is up to your tastes. I highly recommend trying it. Not hard to set up a diddley-bow / Test rig like mine to try it out.
